FAQ: Frequently asked questions and answers about scalp micropigmentation (SMP)
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-invasive treatment that uses detailed micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. The result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles or short hair stubble. If you are starting to thin, recede, or if you are completely bald, we can give you the look of a short buzz cut.
How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?
Our pricing is based on the level of hair loss, which is different for each client. Typically, the price ranges between € 500.– to € 1.000.– per session. We recommend setting up a free consultation so we can evaluate your case and provide a personalized price quote based on your hair loss needs.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation detectable?
Scalp Micropigmentation has become such an effective hair loss solution because of its consistently natural and undetectable results. PRETTIFY with Kay as the SMP-Artist prides itself on the ability to seamlessly replicate each individual hair follicle to create a perfect and naturally looking match for each client.
How many treatments should I expect?
Scalp Micropigmentation should never be considered a one treatment process. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss or scarring. These treatments are usually spaced about 7-14 days apart.
Why should the individual sessions take place 7-14 days apart? Can I wait longer?
For the first session (template session) we choose a relatively light pigment color. After 7-14 days, the second session (density session) should be started with a darker pigment color in order to fill the spaces between the dots set in the first session. Within the third session your artwork is given the final touch and the final density is created. The intervals between your individual sessions should not be too far apart in order to not running around for weeks with just a half-finished result.
If you follow all the instructions and advices and take your appointments within the suggested intervals you only have to skip sports, excessive sweating, baths and saunas for just 4 weeks. So that would be the best case scenario. Therefore, in consultation with us, try to plan the dates for all sessions as best as possible in order to achieve the desired end result quickly.
How long does Scalp Micropigmentation take?
The Scalp Micropigmentation treatment typically takes 2-4 hours per session depending on your degree of hair loss.
How long do the results last?
After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the color to last for many years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolor) of the treatment. When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.
Do I need to take time off work?
Scalp Micropigmentation is non-invasive and requires no down time. In most cases, you will not need to take any extended time away from work, school or other functions. After treatment it is common to notice slight redness on the scalp for 1-2 days post session. This redness subsides quickly and most clients return to work either right away or within a couple days. Clients are also allowed to wear hats or headwear should they feel the need.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation permanent?
Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of permanent cosmetics or permanent makeup. Often referred to as a cosmetic hair or scalp tattoo, this treatment typically lasts 3-6 years – depending on skintype, individual metabolism, external influences such as sun exposure and other factors that cannot be influenced by the client or us. Since the pigmentation has up to 30 shades of grey (unlike a black tattoo), the result becomes more and more inconspicuous and pale over time and a client may experience some slight fading and can come back in for a quick touch up. We recommend refreshing it in 1-2 sessions every 3-4 years. Havin an oily skin, a fresh up may be necessary earlier, because the color pigments fade faster here.
How do I choose a hairline?
If you are unsure of what style or type of hairline will work for you, Kay as your treatment specialist will be there to help. With artistic experience on how to fit a hairline to head shape and age, we can help recommend what’s best. Over the course of your sessions you can also tweak and adjust the hairline for a perfect result. “Less is more!” Step by step until we approach the perfect hairline for you.
What is the difference between SMP and a normal tattoo?
SMP is a form of permanent make-up. Unlike a conventional tattoo by which the color pigments are placed in the lower layers of the skin and remain there forever, we only work on the first layer of the skin (epidermis) when pigmenting the scalp. This layer of skin renews itself over the years and causes the color pigments to fade. As a result, SMP has no lifespan and should be refreshed after a few years.
We only create the finest micropoints using the so-called pointillism method and do not work with shades or lines.
In contrast to tattoo ink, the pigment from ALIVIO (which is used by us) was specially developed for SMP and is designed to fall into the same color spectrum of short cut hair. We only use a black pigment, which can be graded into 30 different shades of gray and is much more thinned than typical tattoo inks. For this reason, it does not disintegrate into different colors, does not become greenish or bluish or looks too saturated after healing. The pigment also contains no additional dyes or additives and will only become lighter over time, but will not change color over a longer period of time.
No conventional tattoo machines are used for SMP, but permanent make-up machines and the finest nano needles specially designed for work on the scalp.
If I have hair left, can I leave it long?
Depending upon the pattern and extent of the thinning hair, some clients are able to maintain a longer length of hair. Scalp Micropigmentation can help thicken areas so that less of the scalp is seen showing through. However, if there is a strong pattern of hair loss or just not a lot of hair density left, the client is recommended to crop it shorter.
Will Scalp Micropigmentation work with grey, blonde or red hair?
Yes, those with gray hair can still benefit from the scalp micropigmentation procedure. First, most clients are recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length. When this is done, grey hair does not appear as grey because the hair root itself is darker. Hair only shows grey, even blond or ginger as it gets longer. Second, we use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing grey hairs.
Can Scalp Micropigmentation camouflage my transplant scar?
Yes! By replicating tiny hair follicles inside the scarring and blending the color around the scarring area, transplant and surgical scars can see massive improvement in concealment.
If I am lighter or darker skin tone will this treatment still look good?
Yes! I am able to match the shade of our pigment to a wide range of skin tones. Whether you are Caucasian, African, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander and much more…Scalp Micropigmentation can work for you.
How long until I can sweat after the scalp micropigmentation treatment?
We highly recommend no heavy sweating or intense exercise for 4-5 days after your Scalp Micropigmentation treatment.
Does the Scalp Micropigmentation procedure hurt?
For most clients, the pain is minimal and it’s consistently less painful than traditional tattoos. After your session you won’t experience any further discomfort.
Is Scalp Micropigmentation for long hair?
Scalp Micropigmentation is used to add density to thinning areas. We are able to add thickness to common areas like the crown, hair parting and more. For people that are using Scalp Micropigmentation to rebuild their hairline, we recommend keeping your hair short for a more balanced look.
What equipment is used for a Scalp Micropigmentation procedure?
The equipment used for a scalp treatment is considered micropigmentation or “permanent cosmetic” equipment. There are many different brands and designs and equipment includes a digital power source, a hand-piece, and disposable micro needles for the insertion of pigment. For Scalp Micropigmentation we use different equipment than standard tattoo artists to ensure the deposits are delicately placed at the appropriate depth in the skin.
Can I still use Propecia and/or Rogaine after my treatment?
Clients can continue using Propecia during and after their Scalp Micropigmentation procedure. Rogaine (topical minoxidil) should be suspended minimum 7 days before, during the course of treatment and for 30 days post your final session. This is to ensure the proper healing and settling of pigment without interference of the chemicals found in Rogaine foam.
Do you charge for a consultation?
No, we offer free consultations for anyone looking to learn about how Scalp Micropigmentation can help their hair loss.
What is the difference between Scalp Micropigmentation, hair tattoo, micropigmentation and scalp tattoo?
Scalp Micropigmentation is not just a traditional tattoo. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a form of permanent cosmetics, but unlike tattooing or permanent makeup, the treatment replicates the look of short cut hair by using pointillism techniques. Scalp Micropigmentation utilizes different equipment than traditional tattooing, ensuring the needle and machine are designed specifically for micropigmentation of the scalp.
How long until I can scrub, shampoo, or shave the smp treatment area?
We recommend no scrubbing, shampooing, or shaving over the treated area for 4-5 days after your Scalp Micropigmentation treatment.
Can I wear a hat after my Scalp Micropigmentation treatment?
Yes, you can wear headgear like hats or caps after your Scalp Micropigmentation treatment is complete. However, we hope you won’t be wearing them as much!
Can I go in the pool, sauna, or steam room after my Scalp Micropigmentation treatment?
We recommend you try to avoid chlorinated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for 28 days post final Scalp Micropigmentation session. Your new look will thank you later for that!
Will Scalp Micropigmentation grow my hair back?
No, the Scalp Micropigmentation treatment will not grow your hair back. However, the SMP treatment will give you the look of short hair or a tight buzz-cut. We recommend keeping your hair at a shorter length to create the most natural outcome.
Why can’t I see my Scalp Micropigmentation after a week?
Especially after the first Scalp Micropigmentation session, your treatment will fade which is completely normal. In the second and third sessions, we add more density to create a fuller look. Pigment retention varies for each person and some may notice more fading than others.
What do I have to consider before treatment?
So that the treatment can be carried out professionally and without complications, please pay attention to the following information.
You cannot be treated if
• you are taking antibiotics or cortisone or have been taking it 3-5 days before your appointment
• have taken blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, marcumar, heparin etc. up to 1 day before your appointment
• you have been vaccinated in the last 48 hours before treatment
• you have a sunburn on the area to be treated
• you have planned a beach vacation within 3 weeks of your appointment
• you have neurodermatitis, open skin or eczema on the area to be treated
• you are pregnant or have recently been and are still breast-feeding
What do I have to consider after the treatment?
The success and durability of an SMP treatment depends – in addition to the health of the skin and its texture – on after care. If you follow the after care instructions that are handed to you in after the treatment, you can significantly influence the result postively.
Do you offer the option of paying in installments?
Yes. We know that financing such a cosmetic treatment can cause difficulties due to the high treatment costs, which in the worst case can lead to the fact that they cannot demand the best possible performance that you want and deserve.
In this case, we offer you a simple, comfortable and, above all, secure solution with the convenient installment payment method by medkred, including 0% financing with a term of 6 months (subject to approval). We would be happy to send you further information in advance by email.
